This is the first, of the .hack//G.U. games.

Summary

The game is about Haseo and his revenge against the PK Tri-Edge for PK'ing (player killing) Shino, a person of emotional importance to Haseo, all taking place within an Online game of the future called "The World Revision: 2"(The original "The World" was taken down from servers due to a fire in the CCcorp building) After the PK Shino in real life entered a coma.

When players start the game, they start right when Haseo first started as a tutorial. After Haseo gets PK'ed for the first time, he's saved by Ovan, which then leads to the events of .hacl//ROOTS, which the game skips as 6 months. After the six months Haseo is now a PKK (Player Killer Killer) known as the Terror of Death. This was all due to his amger towards Tri-Edge for taking away Shino. Haseo then meets Tri-Edge again and fought him. Haseo lost and was data drained as a result.

Data Drain is an ability which going outside of the normal parameters of the game and allows the user to steal their targets data. When Haseo was Data Drained, it resulted in him going back to lvl 1. After this event is when the game truly begins and the players take control of Haseo.

Haseo goes through the game making new friends despite his intimidating attitude and appearance with his goal still in mind, saving Shino. Haseo later finds out that he has a special power within him called, an Avatar. An Avatar is also something that defies the normal game's rules and allows Haseo to summon this "creature" called Skeith in order to defeat AIDA.

AIDA stands for Artificial, Intelligence, Data, Anomoly. Essentially its a bug in the system with a will of its own. It is one of the main, if not, THE main antagonist of the .hack//G.U. games. AIDA can infect players when it come sin contact with them and brings out the darkness of their hearts in order to use them.

Haseo and his friends encounter AIDA numerous times in all the games, wether it controlled a person or was by itself, AIDA consistently was a threat to not just Haseo, but to all the players in "The World R:2"

Character who posses avatars are addressed as "Epitath Users". Haseo is not the only character that posses an Avatar. There are 8, which are known as the 8 Phases of Morgana. Haseo meets all of them throught all the games.

Most of the game's plot development takes place in the Arena where Haseo must win to fight Endrance, the current Demon Palace Emperor because Endrance has been confirmed to be infected by AIDA.

After Haseo defeats Endrance, some time after Haseo finds Tri-Edge and around this time is when vol 1 ends.
